Family Services
School Supplies Program
Remember that wonderful sense of beginning again – a new teacher, new classroom, new friends to meet and the opportunity to become somebody! Unfortunately not every child approaches the new school year so happily, because not every family can afford back-to-school expenses.
The Interfaith Clothing Centers operate the School Supplies Program each year during the summer months. The program, which is run by youth volunteers, provides children of our low-income clients with new backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies free of charge each August.

By providing supplies, the expense of school supplies which can easily cost $50 to $80 per child, is eliminated and families can use their scarce financial resources for other pressing needs such as rent, food, and healthcare. The families and children are able to maintain their dignity and maximize their educational opportunities by having proper tools and supplies.

Thousands of families and individuals use the School Supplies Program. In 2006, your donations helped 2,200 children receive back packs filled with school supplies. The following year, your support helped even more - 2,500 Montgomery County public school children. Today your commitment to this important program is even more critical. The skyrocketing costs of basics such as milk, bread, and gasoline have increased the need even more this year. We expect 3,000 needy students to come to us this fall for help getting ready for the new school year.
